A thermoplastic splint is a device used to immobilize, protect and support injuries such as fractures, sprains and strains.
Thermoplastic splints differ from traditional plaster casts in that they are lighter, easily molded to fit the body of the individual patient and can be removed for cleaning and patient bathing.
A thermoplastic splint can also be used to stabilize an injury prior to surgery as well as to provide fast immobilization to areas of trauma in emergency rooms.
The two basic types of thermoplastic splints are made from low temperature thermoplastic materials and high temperature thermoplastic materials.
Low temperature thermoplastic splints can be softened in hot water and placed directly on the skin and are most appropriate for upper limb fractures or injuries.
High temperature thermoplastic splints are made from polymer materials and require higher temperatures and a longer curing time to harden.
These splints are better suited for lower limb or back injuries that generally require a longer healing period.
