Methyl benzoate, also known as methyl ester of benzoic acid, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H8O2 - It is a colorless transparent oily liquid, insoluble in water, and miscible with methanol, ethanol, and ether.
It has a strong wintergreen and ylang-ylang fragrance, used for preparing perfume essences and artificial essential oils, and can also be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, solvent, food preservative, etc.
Methyl benzoate is stable in air, but slowly oxidizes when oxidants are present; it reacts with alkali, can be saponified, producing benzoic acid solution; it is easy to undergo ester exchange to prepare other benzoates; it is also easily hydrolyzed.
