To realise the thin-film optical devices, we used an approach

in which devices were first fabricated onto a bulk surface and

then subsequently sliced from the parent crystal .

Devices

prepared in this way can be subsequently bonded to a variety

of substrates.

The process starts by fabricating a conventional

mode converter on a surface of a 0.5 mm-thick LiNbO3 wafer.

The bulk device, similar to that first described by Alferness,

consists of a titanium-indiffused waveguide with a pair of

electrodes .

The 3.3 mm-wide straight lines in photo-resist

are patterned on a commercially available Z-cut LiNbO3 wafer

by a laser-direct-writing system.
