Worm Shaft
Worm has one or several spiral teeth and meshes with worm wheel to compose a gear pair with non- parallel.
The reference surface can be cylindrical, conical, or toroidal.
The ordinary cylindrical worm tooth surface is generally lathed by the straight blade cutting tool.
According to the different locations of lathe tool installation, the profile curve of the manufactured worm surface in a different section is also different.
Classifications:
According to different profile curve, common cylindrical worm can be divided into as follows:
1 - Archimedes worm/ Straight sided axial worm ( ZA- worm)
2 - Involute helicoid worm ( ZI- worm)
3 - Normal straight profile worm ( ZN- worm)
4 - Cone enveloping cylindrical worm ( ZK- worm)
Worm Drive/ Transmission
Worm drive is composed by worm and worm wheel and used for transmitted movement and power between crossed axes.
Generally the alternate angle of the two axes is 90°.
Worm is active part in the general worm drive.
From the appearance, worm is similar to a bolt and worm wheel is like a helical cylindrical gear.
The worm gear teeth slide and roll along helicoidal surface, when working.
