JIS SKD2 mold steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium, tungsten-alloyed cold-work mold steel (JIS standard).

It corresponds to AISI D6, DIN 1.2436, and GB Cr12W.

By utilizing a combination of ultra-high carbon content, 12% chromium, and tungsten alloying, it achieves exceptional compressive strength, extreme hardness, and superior wear resistance; however, relatively low toughness is a characteristic trait of such high-wear, high-strength cold-work steels.

The high carbon and chromium content in JIS SKD2 mold steel leads to the formation of a large volume of hard Cr₇C₃ carbides, while the addition of tungsten refines these carbides and enhances high-temperature strength and tempering stability—factors that are fundamental to its high mechanical strength.

- Brinell Hardness: 230–255 HBW

- Tensile Strength: ≈780–850 MPa

- Yield Strength: ≈320–360 MPa

- Elongation: 18%–22%; Reduction of Area: 45%–50%

- Characteristics: Low hardness ensures ease of machining; not suitable for high-strength applications in this state; intended solely for preliminary processing.
