In general, KS SCr440 pipes are a chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel with excellent fatigue resistance.

Its high strength and good toughness make it widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts subjected to alternating loads and stresses (i.e., prone to fatigue).

The fatigue resistance of KS SCr440 pipes stems primarily from its chemical composition and the microstructure achieved through heat treatment:

Chemical Composition (JIS G 4053):

Carbon (C): 0.38-0.43% → Provides high strength and forms hard carbides.

Chromium (Cr): 0.90-1.20% → Improves hardenability (enabling deeper quench hardening) and enhances wear and corrosion resistance.

Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15-0.30% → Significantly improves hardenability, reduces temper brittleness, and refines grain size, thereby improving toughness and fatigue strength.

This Cr-Mo combination is a classic formula for manufacturing high-strength, high-fatigue-resistance parts.

Heat Treatment: KS SCr440 pipes typically undergo a quenching and tempering process (quenching followed by high-temperature tempering).

Quenching: Produces a high-strength martensite structure.

Tempering: Eliminates internal stresses, improving the material's toughness and ductility.

The resulting tempered bainite structure offers an excellent balance of strength and toughness, crucial for high fatigue strength.

Fatigue cracks are less likely to initiate and propagate within the strong and tough matrix.
