GCr15 (Chinese designation, equivalent to US 52100) is a widely used high-carbon chromium bearing steel.

Its cold rolling process is designed to achieve ultra-high dimensional accuracy, excellent surface quality, and the desired microstructure and properties.

It is primarily used in the production of sheet or strip raw materials for high-performance bearing rings and rolling elements (such as balls and rollers).

Cold Rolling Process Process: The prepared billet is rolled through a rolling mill in multiple passes at room temperature, gradually reducing it to the target thickness.

Process Characteristics: * High Deformation: Total deformation can reach 60%-80% or even higher, resulting in significant work hardening.

* High Rolling Forces: Due to the high strength of GCr15 steel, a high-rigidity rolling mill (such as a multi-roll mill, such as a Sendzimir mill) is required to ensure proper sheet shape and straightness.

* Cooling and Lubrication: A high-efficiency process lubricant (such as rolling oil) must be used to reduce friction between the rolls and the strip, prevent sticking and surface scratching, and provide cooling and cleaning effects.

* Intermediate annealing: If the target thickness is very thin or if work hardening is excessive, intermediate annealing may be required during the cold rolling process.

This annealing process also serves the purpose of spheroidizing annealing to restore the material's plasticity for subsequent cold rolling.

Subsequent Processing

* Stress Relief Annealing: After cold rolling, GCr15 steel contains significant residual stresses, which can lead to dimensional instability or deformation during processing.

Stress relief annealing is typically performed at a lower temperature (e.g., ~650°C) to eliminate stress while maintaining the work-hardened strength.

* Final Heat Treatment: After cold rolling, the GCr15 steel is delivered to the bearing manufacturer and undergoes quenching and low-temperature tempering to achieve the final microstructure of a high-carbon martensite matrix with evenly distributed fine carbides.

This achieves the high hardness (HRC 61-65) and wear resistance required for bearings.
