BS BH11 tool steel is a hot work die steel grade under British Standard BS 4659, belonging to the 5% chromium family of hot work tool steels.

It is internationally equivalent to AISI H11, DIN 1.2343 (X37CrMoV5-1), and JIS SKD6 - Independent Mechanisms of Action of Each Chemical Element 1 - Carbon (C): 0.32% – 0.40% — The cornerstone of hardness and strength.

Carbon is the most critical hardening element in tool steel.

2 - Chromium (Cr): 4.75% – 5.25% — The core characteristic of the 5% chromium group.

Chromium is the hallmark alloying element of BS BH11 tool steel, significantly improving the hardenability of the steel and enabling large-sized dies to achieve a uniform martensitic structure even under air cooling conditions.

3 - Molybdenum (Mo): 1.25% – 1.75% — Key to high-temperature strength and tempering stability

Molybdenum plays a crucial role in the high-temperature performance of BS BH11 tool steel: it enhances the steel's high-temperature strength and creep resistance, suppresses low-temperature tempering brittleness, and ensures that the mold maintains high hardness after multiple tempering processes; it also promotes the appearance of secondary hardening peaks.

4 - Vanadium (V): 0.30% – 0.50% — Regulator of grain refinement and wear resistance

Vanadium is a controlled trace element in BS BH11 tool steel, preventing grain coarsening during quenching and thus improving toughness.
