Jis Skd2 Steel Plate Enhancing Machining Stability - China

JIS SKD2 steel plate (equivalent to AISI D6 or DIN 1.2436) is a high-carbon, high-chromium, tungsten-alloyed cold-work die steel that plays a vital role in mold making due to its exceptional wear resistance and high hardness.

However, its inherent high hardness and carbide content present challenges regarding machining stability, such as difficulty in cutting and a high risk of deformation during heat treatment.

Optimization Strategies for Enhancing Machining Stability

Based on the machining characteristics and influencing factors of JIS SKD2 steel plate, the following comprehensive optimization strategies are proposed: Optimization During the Pre-treatment Stage

1 - Soft Annealing: Subjecting the JIS SKD2 steel plate to thorough soft annealing (800–840°C, followed by slow furnace cooling) prior to machining can reduce the hardness to approximately 225 HB.

This significantly improves machinability and reduces both cutting forces and tool wear.

2 - Stress Relief After Rough Machining: For heavy-duty cutting or complex workpieces, perform a stress-relief annealing treatment (650–700°C, holding for 1–2 hours, followed by slow cooling) after rough machining but before finish machining.

This helps release residual stresses generated during rough machining, thereby minimizing deformation during subsequent finishing and heat treatment processes.

4.2 Cutting Parameters and Tool Selection

1 - Tool Material Selection: Given the high hardness and abrasiveness of JIS SKD2 steel plate, priority should be given to high-performance tool materials such as cemented carbide, ceramics, or cubic boron nitride (CBN).

For grinding operations, CBN or diamond abrasives are recommended to achieve optimal surface quality.

2 - Cutting Parameter Optimization:

• Cutting Speed: Moderately reduce cutting speed to minimize cutting heat and tool wear.

• Feed Rate and Depth of Cut: Employ smaller feed rates and depths of cut, utilizing multiple light passes to avoid excessive material removal in a single pass, which could otherwise lead to a sharp increase in cutting forces and workpiece deformation.

• Cooling and lubrication: Use high-efficiency cutting fluid to provide adequate cooling and lubrication, promptly dissipate heat generated during cutting, reduce friction between the tool and the workpiece, and improve the quality of the machined surface.
