SKH51 W-Mo High Speed Steel – Why The Tungsten-Molybdenum Family Won The Market Before the 1950s, toolrooms ran on tungsten-only high speed steels like T1 - Then metallurgists discovered that replacing part of the expensive tungsten with molybdenum produced equal cutting performance at lower cost and better toughness — and the W-Mo family, led by what is now standardized as JIS SKH51 (AISI M2, DIN 1.3343, GB W6Mo5Cr4V2), became the most produced high speed steel in the world.

Understanding why explains its continued dominance.

The chemistry balance that makes it work:

- Tungsten (W 5.50–6.75%) contributes stable M6C carbides that resist softening at cutting temperature.

- Molybdenum (Mo 4.50–5.50%) delivers the same hot-hardness effect at roughly half the atomic weight — more strengthening per kilogram.

- Chromium (Cr 3.80–4.40%) improves hardenability so even larger sections quench fully in oil or gas.

- Vanadium (V 1.75–2.20%) forms the hardest MC carbides, the main abrasive-wear shield.

- Carbon (C 0.80–0.90%) is balanced precisely so quenching retains enough undissolved carbides for wear, while the matrix reaches full hardness.

Practical advantages of SKH51 W-Mo high speed steel:

1 - Better toughness than tungsten-only T1 at equal hardness — fewer chipped edges in interrupted cuts.

2 - Lower cost per performance point, thanks to reduced tungsten content.

3 - Easier heat treatment windows (quench 1200–1240°C, triple temper 550–580°C) suitable for both salt bath and vacuum equipment.

4 - Broad grindability compared with higher-vanadium HSS — cheaper tool manufacturing.

Where it still beats carbide and PM grades:

- Small-diameter drills and taps, where carbide is too brittle and PM too expensive.

- Reamers, counterbores and general-purpose cutters for jobbing shops.

- Punches and dies under moderate cyclic load with a need for regrindability.
