ASTM 5140 steel heat treatment process

Heat treatment is a key link in the precision machining of ASTM 5140 steel.

The main processes include annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering:

Annealing: Usually carried out at around 790℃, followed by furnace cooling to improve the plasticity and toughness of the material, while reducing the hardness for subsequent processing.

Normalizing: Carried out in the temperature range of 860℃-880℃, which can improve the cutting performance of steel and reduce stress.

Quenching: Austenitizing at a temperature of 840℃-860℃, followed by rapid cooling to obtain martensitic structure, improve the hardness and strength of steel.

The surface hardness after quenching can reach HRC 52-60 - Tempering: After quenching, the steel needs to be tempered to reduce the hardness and improve the toughness.

The tempering temperature is usually between 150℃-200℃, and the specific temperature depends on the required hardness and toughness level.
