JIS SCM440 steel is a low alloy quenched and tempered structural steel in the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), corresponding to the Chinese grade 42CrMo and the American AISI 4140 - 1 - Smelting method

Electric arc furnace smelting (commonly used):

JIS SCM440 steel uses scrap steel, pig iron, and alloy materials as raw materials, melts by electric arc heating, and accurately controls the composition.

Key control points:

Decarburization: Remove carbon from the molten steel through oxidation reaction, and remove impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur.

Alloying: Add alloy elements such as Cr, Mo, and Mn in proportion to ensure uniform composition.

Deoxidation and desulfurization: Add deoxidizers such as ferrosilicon and ferromanganese, and reduce the sulfur content (target ≤0.030%) by making alkaline slag (such as CaO-SiO₂-Al₂O₃ system).

LF furnace refining (optional):

Further desulfurization, deoxidation, composition adjustment, and improvement of steel liquid purity (reducing inclusion content).

Vacuum degassing (if necessary): used in high-demand scenarios (such as aviation, high-pressure components), to reduce hydrogen and nitrogen content and avoid pores in castings.

2 - Casting process (1) Preparation before casting

Mold design:

JIS SCM440 steel adopts sand casting (such as resin sand, water glass sand) or metal casting.

The mold needs to be resistant to high temperature and erosion.

Design a reasonable pouring and riser system to ensure smooth filling of the molten steel and avoid air entrainment and shrinkage.

Steel liquid temperature:

Pouring temperature is usually 1520-1560℃ (needs to be adjusted according to casting size and complexity).

Too low temperature is easy to cause cold shut and insufficient pouring, while too high temperature increases shrinkage and oxidation risks.

(2) Key control of casting process

Filling speed:

JIS SCM440 steel adopts bottom pouring system, which fills slowly to reduce turbulence and scale formation.

Solidification control:

Sequential solidification is achieved through chill and riser design to ensure that shrinkage cavities are concentrated on the riser to avoid internal defects in the casting.

When casting large parts, step-by-step pouring can be used, and segmented filling can be used to balance the temperature field.
