As the Chinese standard version of AISI M2, W6Mo5Cr4V2 has well defined hardness targets at every condition.

Hardness Values By Condition:

1 - Annealed (delivered condition): max 255 HB, typically 229-241 HB.

This soft state allows easy machining of drills, taps and tool bodies.

2 - After hardening (as-quenched): HRC 63-66 - Very high but brittle, not usable before tempering.

3 - After triple tempering 540-560C (working condition): HRC 62-65 - This is the specification hardness for finished tools.

4 - Red hardness at 600C: the cutting edge retains about HRC 60, which is why the grade dominates HSS cutting tools.

How To Check Hardness Correctly:

- Annealed stock: test with a Brinell tester (3000 kg load, 10mm ball) on a ground surface.

- Hardened tools: Rockwell C scale, average of three points away from edges.

- Always test after grinding burn removal; a burned surface can read falsely low.

Why Hardness May Fall Short:

- Under-tempering leaves retained austenite, hardness drifts down after a few weeks.

- Over-austenitizing coarsens grain and lowers toughness even when hardness looks high.

- Decarburized surface layer reads soft; confirm by removing 0.5mm and retesting.

Practical Acceptance Criteria For Purchasers:

- Annealed bar and plate: reject above 255 HB.

- Heat treated parts: accept HRC 62-65 with three-temper records.

- Ask for hardness test report attached to the EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate.
