20X steel (Russian standard steel grade, GOST 20X) is a low-alloy structural steel whose primary alloying element is chromium (X stands for chromium).

This steel grade is widely used in Russia to manufacture medium-strength mechanical parts, axles, gears, crankshafts, and other applications.

It exhibits excellent hardenability and toughness.

The typical smelting process for 20X steel is as follows:

1 - Raw Material Preparation

Use high-quality scrap steel, pig iron, alloy iron (ferrochrome), etc.

Control the content of impurity elements (such as sulfur and phosphorus) in the raw materials.

2 - Smelting Method

-The following two processes are commonly used:

-Basic oxygen furnace (BOF): Suitable for mass production, fast reaction time, and high efficiency.

-Electric arc furnace (EAF) + LF refining furnace (external refining): Suitable for the production of alloy structural steel with higher quality requirements.

3 - In-furnace smelting process

* Scrap steel, pig iron, and other main raw materials are added.

* Gradually increase the temperature to melt, and perform oxidative dephosphorization and desulfurization.

* Add ferrochrome at the appropriate stage for a complete alloying treatment.

* Precisely control temperature and composition to prevent excessive oxidation.

4 - External Refining (LF Refining Furnace)

* Used for further desulfurization, inclusion removal, and composition adjustment.

* Argon stirring can be used to promote uniformity.

* Control the content of gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen to avoid defects such as pores.
