X37CrMoV 5-1 Material Heat Treatment Process

The heat treatment process for X37CrMoV 5-1 material is crucial to its final properties; it primarily consists of annealing, quenching, and tempering: 4.1 Annealing

Purpose: To eliminate internal stresses resulting from forging or rolling, reduce hardness, improve machinability, and prepare the material for subsequent processing and heat treatment.

Process parameters: Heat to 800–850°C, hold for 2–4 hours, cool with the furnace to below 500°C, and then air cool.

Maximum hardness after annealing is 250 HB.

4.2 Quenching

Purpose: To obtain a martensitic microstructure and enhance hardness and wear resistance.

Process parameters: Heat uniformly to 1020–1060°C (commonly 1020–1040°C); the holding time depends on workpiece size, typically ranging from 30 to 60 minutes.

Preheating at 300–500°C is optional.

Cooling methods include oil cooling or air cooling.

For large workpieces, marquenching (cooling in a salt bath at 260–300°C for a specific period followed by air cooling) may be used to minimize quenching stresses and prevent deformation or cracking.

4.3 Tempering

Purpose: To relieve quenching stresses, adjust hardness and toughness, and stabilize the microstructure and dimensions.

Process parameters:

• Low-temperature tempering: 150–250°C, hold for 2–3 hours, air cool; tempered hardness of 58–62 HRC; suitable for molds requiring high hardness and wear resistance.

• Medium-temperature tempering: 300–500°C, hold for 2–3 hours, air cool; tempered hardness of 50–58 HRC; improves toughness; suitable for molds subjected to impact loads.

• High-temperature tempering: 500–650°C; hold for 2–3 hours; air cool; tempered hardness 45–50 HRC (54 HRC at 550°C, 47 HRC at 650°C); primarily used for applications requiring higher toughness.
