Heat Treatment Specification for KS STD6 die steel

1 - Annealing after forging

Heat: 820~870℃, sufficient soaking, furnace slow cooling (≤30℃/h) down to 500℃, air cool.

Hardness target: ≤HB229 - 2 - Hardening (Quenching)

Two-stage preheating: 550~600℃ → 780~820℃

Austenitizing: 1020~1040℃ (max ≤1050℃)

Soaking time: 20~30min per 25mm thickness.

Cooling: High-pressure nitrogen gas quenching / forced air cooling.

Do NOT water quench.

Cool to 80~150℃, temper immediately.

3 - Tempering (Minimum 2 cycles)

- 530~550℃ → HRC52~55

- 560~580℃ → HRC48~52 (common for hot forging & extrusion dies)

- 590~620℃ → HRC44~48

Soaking ≥2 hours each cycle; cool fully to room temperature between tempers.

Avoid temper range: 480~520℃ (temper brittleness).
