ASTM A2 Steel Pipe Key Performance and Heat Treatment 1 - Heat Treatment Process

Annealing: Hold at 850–870℃, furnace cool to below 600℃, then air cool; hardness ≤229 HB;

Preheating: Two-stage preheating at 650℃ and 850℃;

Quenching: Hold at 950–980℃, then air cool (air cooling is a core advantage of ASTM A2 steel pipe, significantly reducing deformation and cracking);

Tempering: Multiple temperings at 200–600℃ (at least 2 times) to avoid retained austenite; commonly used hardness 57–62 HRC (cold work dies), can be reduced to 54–56 HRC for higher toughness; 2 - Mechanical Properties (after quenching and tempering)

Tensile Strength: ≥2000 MPa;

High compressive strength, superior toughness compared to D2 tool steel, extremely strong dimensional stability;

Non-magnetic at room temperature, minimal deformation after machining/heat treatment;

Machining Characteristics: Easy to turn/drill in annealed state/ Grinding; after heat treatment, it needs to be machined with CBN or diamond tools; it is not suitable for welding (welding will cause uneven hardness and cracks, and preheating + post-weld tempering is necessary if necessary).
