CNS SNCM439 steel is an alloy structural steel specified by the Taiwan Standard (CNS), corresponding to 43CrNiMo4 (DIN) or AISI 4340 steel in the international standard.

It is a high-strength alloy structural steel and is often used to manufacture parts that withstand high loads, impacts and fatigue (such as shafts, gears, bolts, etc.

).

Its tempering treatment is a key link in the heat treatment process, the purpose of which is to eliminate quenching stress and adjust mechanical properties (balance of strength, hardness and toughness).

Basic principles of tempering treatment

After quenching, CNS SNCM439 steel is in a martensitic structure state, with high hardness (about 55~60 HRC) but high brittleness and significant internal stress.

Tempering is done by heating to a temperature below Ac1 (usually 200~650℃), keeping the temperature, and then cooling it, so that martensite decomposes into tempered martensite, troostite or pearlite, and alloy carbides are precipitated to achieve:

1 - Reduce brittleness and improve toughness;

2 - Eliminate internal stress and reduce the risk of deformation and cracking of parts;

3 - Adjust hardness and strength to meet different usage requirements.
