Special Steel Spot Ks Scr440 Material Quenching Treatment Process - China

KS SCr440 material (equivalent to JIS SCr440, AISI 5140, DIN 1.7035, or China GB 40Cr) is a medium-carbon, low-alloy steel widely used in machinery manufacturing for high-strength components such as gears, shafts, and connecting rods, thanks to its excellent overall mechanical properties and good hardenability.

Quenching is a key process for enhancing the performance of SCr440, significantly improving its hardness, strength, and wear resistance.

KS SCr440 Material Quenching Process

Quenching is the process of heating steel to austenitizing temperature, holding it at that temperature, and then rapidly cooling it to form a martensite structure.

The following are typical quenching steps for KS SCr440 material:

2.1 Heating (Austenitizing)

- **Temperature**: 830-860°C (850°C is generally optimal).

Heating to this temperature allows for complete transformation of pearlite to austenite and complete carbon dissolution.

- **Holding Time**: Depending on part size, typically 0.5-1 hour/25mm thickness to ensure uniform internal temperature.

- **Precautions**:

- Avoid overheating (>900°C), as this will coarsen the grains and reduce toughness.

- Use a protective atmosphere (such as vacuum or inert gas) to prevent oxidation and decarburization.

2.2 Cooling (Quenching)

- **Quenching Medium**:

- **Oil Quenching**: Recommended for smaller or complex parts (Ø15-40mm).

A moderate cooling rate reduces the risk of cracking.

- **Water Quenching**: Suitable for larger parts (Ø28-60mm), but be aware of the risk of deformation and cracking.

- **Cooling Rate**: The cooling rate must be fast enough to pass through the pearlite and bainite regions on the CCT curve and form martensite (cooling rate >105 K/s).
