BA2 Steel (A2) Air-Cooling Hardening Properties (Key Points) 1 - Can be hardened by air cooling, no oil, water, or quenching fluid required.

This is the core characteristic of BA2: - Quenching temperature: 940–980℃ - Cooling method: Static air cooling (air cooling/wind cooling) → Achieves 60–62 HRC.

2 - Can harden even large sections, extremely high hardenability - Workpieces with thickness/diameter ≤100mm can be fully hardened by air cooling.

- Uniform hardness inside and out, avoiding "hard outside, soft inside" appearance.

→ Ideal for thick modules and large molds.

3 - Minimal heat treatment deformation (micro-deformation steel) Due to slow air cooling and low stress: - Deformation is much less than oil-quenched steel O1 and water-quenched steel.

- Extremely low risk of cracking.

→ Preferred choice for precision molds and long-life cutting tools.

4 - Maintains high hardness after tempering** Air quenching + low-temperature tempering: - Tempering at 200℃: ≈60–62 HRC - Tempering at 400℃: ≈57–58 HRC Extremely high dimensional stability, suitable for measuring tools, guide sleeves, and precision dies.

5 - Advantages of air hardening - No mold deformation, no need for correction - Smooth surface, no oxidation, no decarburization - Simple process, low cost, high yield BA2 steel is a typical air-hardening cold work die steel.

Heated at 940–980℃, it can be fully hardened to over 60 HRC by static air cooling alone.

It has high hardenability and minimal heat treatment deformation, making it an ideal material for precision molds and high-precision parts.
