Belonging to the high-chromium ledeburitic steel family, AISI D6 material generally outperforms D2 steel in wear resistance—though with slightly lower toughness—making it better suited for applications where wear, rather than impact, is the primary stress factor.

The combination of high carbon and high chromium results in the formation of abundant hard carbides, which is the key factor behind the material's superior wear resistance.
