ASTM D6 Steel Chemical Composition: Core Functions of Each Element

### 1 - C (Carbon) [2.00–2.20%]

- Ultra-high carbon content serves as the foundation for **high hardness and superior wear resistance**.

- Forms **alloy carbides** in conjunction with Cr and W, significantly enhancing wear resistance and compressive strength.

- Ensures that a high hardness level of **64–66 HRC** is achievable after quenching.

- Drawback: The elevated carbon content results in **lower toughness**; thus, it is suitable for cold-work applications requiring high wear resistance but is **not suitable for applications involving heavy impact**.

### 2 - Cr (Chromium) [11.50–12.50%]

- The high chromium content facilitates the formation of **abundant hard M₇C₃ carbides**, effectively doubling wear resistance.

- Significantly improves **hardenability**; even thick sections can be fully through-hardened via air cooling alone, resulting in minimal distortion.

- Enhances **corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance**, thereby reducing die rusting and surface decarburization.

- Stabilizes the tempered microstructure and improves dimensional stability.

### 3 - W (Tungsten) [0.60–0.90%]

- Refines grain structure, thereby **enhancing thermal stability and hot hardness (red hardness)**.

- Forms tungsten carbides, further reinforcing **wear resistance and resistance to galling/seizing**.

- Compared to the tungsten-free D3 grade, D6—thanks to its W content—exhibits **superior wear resistance, heat resistance, and service life**.

- Reduces the tendency for softening during high-temperature tempering, making it highly suitable for dies used in continuous mass production.
