W-Nr 1.2379 steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel under the German DIN standard, corresponding to the internationally used AISI D2, Japanese JIS standard SKD11, and European EN standard X153CrMoV12 - This steel is renowned for its excellent wear resistance and high hardness, and is widely used in long-life stamping dies, cold extrusion dies, thread rolling dies, and high-precision cutting tools.

Machining Considerations 1.1 Machining in the Annealed State W-Nr 1.2379 steel is relatively easy to machine in the annealed state (approximately 200-250 HB/225 Brinell hardness), but due to its high carbide content, its machinability is only about 50% of that of W1 tool steel.

1.2 Machining in the Hardened State When W-Nr 1.2379 steel is in the hardened state (58-62 HRC), the cutting force increases significantly, necessitating the use of PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) or ceramic tools for hard turning.

II.

Key Points of Heat Treatment Process 2.1 Annealing Treatment If re-annealing is required, slowly and uniformly heat to 850-900°C, hold for 3-4 hours, and then furnace cool to room temperature.

Reheat to 800-1040°C, hold for 3-4 hours, and then furnace cool.

The hardness after annealing is approximately 225 HB.

2.2 Stress-Relief Annealing

Stress relief treatment is essential after rough machining to prevent quenching deformation.

Heat to 600-650°C, hold sufficiently, and then furnace cool or air cool.

Following these precautions will fully utilize the high wear resistance and dimensional stability of W-Nr 1.2379 steel, extending mold life and reducing production costs.
