X100crmov5 1 Steel Precautions For Machining - China

X100CrMoV5-1 steel is a German standard high-carbon, high-chromium cold work die steel (corresponding to the Chinese national standard Cr12Mo1V1 and the American standard D2).

It belongs to the ledeburitic steel category and possesses high hardness, high wear resistance, and good hardenability, but low plasticity and toughness, resulting in poor machinability (especially after quenching), making it a typical difficult-to-machine material.

First, determine the material state before machining (a crucial prerequisite).

The hardness of X100CrMoV5-1 steel varies greatly depending on its heat treatment state, directly determining the cutting method and tool type.

Before machining, it is essential to confirm: Annealed state: Hardness approximately 200~220 HBW, this is the state with the best machinability, suitable for roughing and semi-finishing.

Most of the excess material should be removed in this state first.

Quenched and tempered state: Hardness approximately 28~32 HRC, cutting difficulty increases, requiring the use of cemented carbide or ceramic tools.

Quenched and tempered state: Hardness 58~62 HRC, belonging to the category of hard cutting, with extremely poor machinability, only suitable for finishing (such as precision turning, precision milling, and grinding), requiring special superhard tools.
