A self tapping screw is a threaded fastener engineered to form or cut its own mating thread as it is driven into a pre-drilled pilot hole — or in some cases, directly into the base material with no pre-drilling required.

Unlike machine screws that require a pre-tapped hole, self tapping screws create the thread themselves during installation, eliminating an assembly step and reducing overall production cost.

Self threading screws are one of the most widely used fastener types across global manufacturing because they offer fast installation, reliable pull-out strength, and repeatable performance in automated assembly lines.

Pan Head — A slightly domed, flat-bottomed head with a large bearing surface.

The most versatile head style for general self tapping applications.

Available with Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, slotted, and square drives.

Flat Head (Countersunk) — An 82° or 90° countersunk profile that sits flush with or below the material surface upon installation.

Used in applications where a protruding head creates interference or is aesthetically unacceptable.

Requires a countersunk hole.

Oval Head — A semi-countersunk profile with a decorative dome above the material surface.

Combines flush-seating with visible finished appearance.

Common in furniture and consumer product assembly.

Hex Washer Head — A hexagonal head with an integrated washer flange.

Designed for high-torque power tool driving and applications requiring a large clamping area.

Standard in metal building construction, roofing, and HVAC ductwork assembly.

Truss Head — An extra-wide, low-profile dome head with the largest bearing surface among standard self tapping head styles.

Ideal when the material is soft or thin and a standard head would pull through under load.

Common in sheet metal enclosure assembly.

Round Head — A full dome profile, now largely replaced by pan head in modern applications but still specified in legacy assemblies and certain electrical/panel applications.

Binding Head — A shallow, wide head with a recess undercut, used in electrical wiring and cable management where the head must retain a clamp or terminal.
