Key process parameters of high-frequency induction heating surface quenching of AISI 4142 alloy steel

1 - Heating temperature

Goal: to austenitize the surface while avoiding overheating or coarse grains.

Temperature range: usually 860 - 920℃ (specific adjustment needs to be made according to the workpiece size, induction coil power and heating speed).

If the heating temperature is insufficient, the surface hardness and hardened layer depth may be insufficient;

If the temperature is too high, it is easy to cause coarse surface grains and increased brittleness.

2 - Heating time

Control points: Determined according to the workpiece diameter, hardened layer depth requirements and equipment power, generally 5 - 30 seconds.

Example: For shaft parts with a diameter of 30mm, if the hardened layer depth is required to be 1 - 1.5mm, the heating time is about 10 - 15 seconds.

Effect: If the time is too short, the surface is not fully austenitized; if the time is too long, the core temperature rises, which is easy to cause deformation.

3 - Cooling method

Common media: Water: fast cooling speed, suitable for parts with simple shapes and good hardenability (such as small-sized gears);

Polymer aqueous solution (such as PAG): cooling speed is between water and oil, can reduce deformation and cracking, suitable for parts with complex shapes;

Oil: slow cooling speed, used to prevent quenching cracks in high-hardenability materials (but less used in high-frequency quenching).
