The precision machining process of AISI 5140 alloy material mainly includes the following aspects:

(1) Cutting

Cutting parameters: AISI 5140 alloy material has good machining performance, but with the increase of hardness, the machining difficulty will increase accordingly.

During cutting, it is usually necessary to select appropriate cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth according to the hardness of the material.

For example, in turning and milling processes, it is recommended to use a higher cutting speed (such as 75-100 m/min) and a moderate feed rate (such as 0.15-0.2 mm/rev).

Cooling and lubrication: Coolant or lubricant is usually required during the machining process to reduce cutting temperature, reduce tool wear and improve surface quality.

Studies have shown that the use of cryogenic liquid nitrogen (Cryo-LN₂) cooling and lubrication can significantly improve machining performance, reduce surface roughness and cutting temperature.

(2) Surface treatment

Nitriding treatment: AISI 5140 alloy material is a nitridable steel.

After nitriding, it can obtain a higher surface hardness.

After quenching and tempering, the hardness of nitriding treatment can reach HRA 72-78 (HRC 43-55).

Nitriding process is usually used to improve the wear resistance and fatigue strength of parts.

Flame quenching and induction heating: For parts with higher local hardness requirements, flame quenching or induction heating process can be used.

Flame quenching can achieve a hardness of HRC 48-55 - The precision machining process of AISI 5140 alloy material needs to comprehensively consider factors such as material heat treatment, cutting parameters and surface treatment to ensure the performance and quality of the final parts.
