After quenching and tempering, 40Cr alloy steel has good comprehensive mechanical properties, good low-temperature impact toughness and low notch sensitivity.

In addition to quenching and tempering, it is also suitable for cyaniding and high-frequency quenching.

40Cr steel has medium cold deformation plasticity, good machinability, poor weldability and good toughness index.

Process flow of quenching and tempering

Quenching and tempering includes two main steps: quenching and high-temperature tempering.

The specific process parameters will vary depending on actual needs and workpiece size.

(1) Quenching

Heating temperature: The quenching heating temperature of 40Cr alloy steel is usually between 830℃ and 860℃.

This temperature range can ensure that the steel obtains a good austenitization effect while avoiding excessive grain growth, thereby ensuring the hardness and toughness after quenching.

Hot holding time: The determination of the hot holding time needs to take into account the size and shape of the workpiece.

Generally speaking, the thicker the workpiece, the longer the hot holding time.

It is usually determined according to the empirical formula of 1 to 2 minutes of hot holding per millimeter of thickness, but in actual operation, it needs to be adjusted according to specific circumstances.

Quenching medium: Commonly used quenching media are oil and water.

(2) High temperature tempering

Tempering temperature: The high temperature tempering temperature of 40Cr alloy steel is generally between 500℃ and 650℃.

The choice of tempering temperature has an important influence on the final performance of the material.

When tempering at 500℃~550℃, higher hardness and good toughness can be obtained, which is suitable for manufacturing parts requiring higher strength; when tempering at 550℃~650℃, the hardness will be reduced, but the toughness is better, which is suitable for manufacturing parts subject to larger impact loads.

Holding time: The tempering holding time is generally 1~2 hours, and the specific time should be adjusted according to the size and shape of the workpiece.

Too short a holding time may lead to insufficient tempering and fail to achieve the expected performance; too long a holding time will waste energy and may have an adverse effect on performance.
