SKH51 Cutting Tool Steel – Selecting Between HSS Grades With Real Production Logic Tool producers face a crowded grade list: SKH51, M35, M42, SKH55, PM grades — each with a price and a performance story.

SKH51 cutting tool steel (JIS G4403, equal to AISI M2, DIN 1.3343 and GB W6Mo5Cr4V2) remains the volume leader because it covers the widest range of cutting applications at the best cost-performance point.

SKH51 versus other common cutting tool steels:

1 - Versus T1 (tungsten-only HSS): SKH51 offers equal hot hardness with better toughness and lower cost — a clear upgrade for nearly all general cutting tools.

2 - Versus M35 (5% cobalt): cobalt adds a few degrees of hot hardness for stainless and high-temp alloys, at 20–40% price premium.

Choose M35 only when workpiece hardness demands it; SKH51 handles carbon and alloy steels excellently.

3 - Versus M42 (8% cobalt, 68 HRC): superb for hardened steels, but brittle and costly.

For jobbing drills and taps, SKH51 survives interrupted cuts M42 cannot.
