SKH51 Forged Steel – Why Forging, Not Casting, Makes A Reliable High Speed Steel High speed steel cannot be used as-cast: its alloy carbides solidify into coarse, brittle networks that crack under load.

Forging is the step that transforms this structure — and the forging process behind SKH51 forged steel (JIS standard, equal to AISI M2, DIN 1.3343 and GB W6Mo5Cr4V2) decides how your finished tools will behave years later.

Here is what happens between the ingot and the bar you receive.

The forging route at Songshun:

1 - EAF melting and casting into electrodes, with chemistry locked per heat (C 0.80–0.90 / Cr 3.80–4.40 / Mo 4.50–5.50 / W 5.50–6.75 / V 1.75–2.20).

2 - Heating to forging temperature under a controlled schedule to avoid internal cracking of the brittle as-cast structure.

3 - Breaking down on a 7000-ton hydraulic press — the high tonnage works the whole cross section, crushing carbide networks and welding internal porosity.

4 - Repeated upsetting and drawing cycles refine carbide bands from coarse segregation into a fine, uniform dispersion.

5 - Slow controlled cooling, then full annealing in-house to HB 255 max for machining.

What proper forging gives your tools:

- Fine, evenly distributed carbides: uniform hardness after quenching at 1200–1240°C, no soft or over-alloyed zones.

- Sound internal structure: porosity closed by the press, confirmed by ultrasonic testing on all sections above 50mm.

- Isotropic toughness: forged SKH51 resists cracking in every direction — critical for punches under transverse loads.

- Predictable heat treatment: uniform structure means your triple temper at 550–580°C lands at HRC 63–65 every batch.
