M2 high red hardness HSS (AISI M2 / DIN 1.3343 / JIS SKH51 / GB W6Mo5Cr4V2) retains its tempered martensite structure and hard M6C/MC carbides even when the cutting edge heats up to around 550-600°C during high speed machining.

Ordinary alloy tool steels soften and lose the edge under the same conditions.

After hardening at 1190-1230°C and triple tempering at 540-560°C, M2 reaches HRC 62-64 and keeps HRC 60+ even at elevated temperature — the property that defines true high speed steel.
