Heat Treatment Processes: Different quenching media (e.g., oil quenching, salt bath quenching) and tempering processes significantly affect the final properties of ASTM D2 material.

For example, studies have found that salt bath quenching (also known as bright quenching) yields a more uniform carbide distribution and less retained austenite than traditional oil quenching, thereby increasing tensile strength from approximately 1608 MPa to 1764 MPa and impact toughness from 3.2 J to 3.7 J.

Microalloying: Researchers have discovered that adding trace amounts of elements such as niobium (Nb) and cerium/lanthanum (Ce/La) to ASTM D2 material can refine the grain size and improve the morphology of carbides (from a continuous network to a broken, blocky, or granular structure), thus significantly improving the toughness and ductility of the material with almost no loss of hardness.

For example, adding 1.5% niobium can increase elongation to approximately 5.8% and impact toughness to 15 J/cm².
