Heat treatment is a critical stage in developing the properties of GB Cr12W mold steel and a key factor influencing dimensional stability; therefore, strict control is required: 1 - Multi-stage preheating: Perform multi-stage preheating prior to quenching (e.g., first at 650–700°C, then at 750–800°C) to minimize thermal shock and reduce the risk of workpiece cracking and deformation.

2 - Austenitizing (quenching heat): Strictly control the heating temperature (950–980°C) and holding time to ensure complete austenitization while avoiding grain coarsening or incomplete transformation.

3 - Quenching method: Oil quenching is typically used for GB Cr12W mold steel.

To minimize deformation, ensure uniform quenching—such as by agitating the quenching medium.

For workpieces with stringent deformation requirements, milder cooling methods—like vacuum quenching or high-pressure gas quenching—may be considered, provided hardness requirements are met.

4 - Double tempering: Tempering should be performed immediately after quenching, and double tempering is strongly recommended.

The first temper aims to reduce quenching stresses, while the second eliminates retained austenite and further enhances the material's toughness and dimensional stability.

The workpiece should be cooled to room temperature between the two tempering cycles.

5 - Post-quenching stress relief: For workpieces subjected to heavy grinding, welding, or electrical discharge machining (EDM), a low-temperature stress relief treatment should be performed prior to final finishing.

This typically involves holding the workpiece at a temperature 15–30°C lower than the final tempering temperature for 1–2 hours.
