1.7218 alloy structural steel is an alloy structural steel in the EN 10083-3 standard, corresponding to the German DIN standard 31CrMoV9, similar to China's 30CrMoV.

Nitriding process selection

Nitriding can significantly improve the surface hardness, wear resistance and fatigue strength of 1.7218 alloy structural steel, and is suitable for gears, shafts and other parts.

Common processes:

(1) Gas nitriding

(2) Plasma nitriding

(3) Salt bath nitriding (QPQ, Quench-Polish-Quench) Process parameter optimization suggestions

Pretreatment:

- Tempering (quenching + tempering) to a hardness of 28-32 HRC to ensure matrix strength.

- Surface cleaning (removal of oxide scale, oil stains, sandblasting or pickling).

Nitriding post-treatment:

- Polishing or grinding (reducing surface roughness).

- Post-oxidation treatment (to improve corrosion resistance, such as QPQ process).
