Purpose of carburizing treatment

ASTM 4140 steel coil Carburizing is a surface hardening treatment process, the main purpose of which is to significantly improve the surface hardness and wear resistance by forming a high-carbon alloy layer on the surface of the steel, while maintaining the toughness of the core.

This treatment is particularly suitable for parts that need to withstand high contact stress and wear, such as gears, shafts, bearings, etc.

Carburizing treatment process

Carburizing treatment usually includes the following steps:

Pretreatment: ASTM 4140 steel coil usually needs to be tempered before carburizing to obtain good core performance.

The hardness after tempering is usually between 25 - 36 HRC.

Carburizing: The parts are placed in a carburizing furnace and carburized at high temperature (usually 900 - 950℃) and carbon-rich atmosphere.

The carburizing time depends on the required carburizing layer depth, usually several hours to tens of hours.

Quenching and tempering: The carburized parts need to be quenched to improve the surface hardness.

After quenching, low temperature tempering (150 - 200°C) is usually required to reduce internal stress and adjust surface hardness.
