Tempering 5140 Material

After quenching, 5140 material has a high hardness (52-60 HRC) but is also quite brittle, requiring tempering to adjust its properties: Tempering Temperature:

Low-temperature tempering (150-200°C): For high-hardness, wear-resistant components (such as shafts and pins), maintaining a hardness of 50-55 HRC.

Medium-temperature tempering (400-550°C): For heavily loaded, medium-speed impact components (such as gears and rotors), achieving a hardness of approximately 35-45 HRC while maintaining toughness.

Hot-holding time: 1-2 hours per 25mm thickness.

Precautions:

Avoid tempering at 250-450°C, as this may cause temper brittleness and reduce impact toughness.

Air cool after tempering to avoid secondary quenching.
