1.2436 material steel: Composition and Properties

Key Chemical Composition: The inherent "toughness" of this 1.2436 material steel is primarily derived from its high carbon and high chromium content.

Carbon (C): Content ranges from 2.00% to 2.30%; this high carbon level ensures high hardness.

Chromium (Cr): Content ranges from 11.50% to 13.00%; this provides excellent hardenability and wear resistance.

Tungsten (W): Content ranges from 0.60% to 0.80%; this further enhances its resistance to wear and abrasion.

Other elements—such as silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur—are present in lower quantities and serve primarily as auxiliary agents.

1.2436 material steel: Mechanical Properties

Hardness: In the annealed state, hardness does not exceed 255 HBW; after quenching and tempering, hardness can reach 60–64 HRC, making it extremely hard.

Wear Resistance: Extremely high; suitable for manufacturing high-load cold-work tools, and possesses strong edge-retention capabilities.

Toughness: Impact toughness is relatively low; it is not suitable for operating conditions involving heavy impact loads—for instance, it is generally not well-suited for use in large blanking dies.

Machinability: Exhibits good machinability and grindability; it is less prone to cracking during wire-cutting operations—a performance advantage it holds over SKD11 - Songshun specialized in Special Steel for almost 20 years.
