D2 Cold Work Tool Steel, due to its high carbon and chromium content, has poor thermal conductivity and high deformation resistance, making it a steel grade that is difficult to forge.

The key to its forging process lies in strict temperature control, the use of correct operating methods (such as directional forging), and slow post-forging cooling.

Core Points of Forging Process Besides temperature control, the forging method is equally crucial, mainly reflected in the following three aspects: 1 - Thoroughly breaking down carbides: D2 Cold Work Tool Steel contains a large number of eutectic carbides, distributed in bands or networks, which are the steel's weak areas.

The primary function of forging is to break down these coarse carbides through mechanical force, distributing them evenly, thereby significantly improving the steel's mechanical properties and die life.

2 - Using "directional forging": To more effectively break down carbides and eliminate the anisotropy of material properties, directional forging (also known as cross-forging or three-directional forging) is strongly recommended.

This method ensures sufficient deformation of the core by repeatedly upsetting and drawing the billet in different directions, thereby obtaining a uniform and fine carbide structure.

3 - Implement the "Two Light, One Heavy" operation: During forging, the principle of **"Two Light, One Heavy"** should be followed, namely: **lightly strike at low temperatures** (to prevent cracking), **heavily strike at high temperatures** (to effectively break up carbides), and **lightly strike near the final forging temperature** (to prevent forging cracking).

At the same time, frequent turning and even pressure should be applied to avoid repeated heavy strikes on the same part of the billet, which could lead to overheating.
