X210Cr12 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel; preheating constitutes a critical step in its heat treatment process.

**Key Functions of Preheating**

1 - **Mitigating Thermal Shock**

X210Cr12 material features a high carbon content (1.90–2.20%) and chromium content (11.0–13.0%), resulting in relatively poor thermal conductivity.

If the workpiece is heated directly and rapidly to the austenitizing temperature (940–980°C), the excessive temperature differential between the interior and exterior of the workpiece will induce severe thermal stresses, potentially leading to cracking.

2 - **Enhancing Equipment Efficiency**

Preheating allows for temperature homogenization of the workpiece to be achieved within a lower temperature range.

This effectively reduces the required holding time at high temperatures, thereby minimizing oxidation and decarburization.

3 - **Reducing the Risk of Oxidation and Decarburization**

The preheating stage is conducted at lower temperatures; when combined with a controlled atmosphere or pack hardening techniques, this process effectively protects the surface of the workpiece.

**Summary**

The core principle of the X210Cr12 preheating process lies in a staged, gradual temperature rise.

This ensures temperature uniformity across the workpiece's cross-section, thereby preventing deformation or cracking caused by thermal stresses.

For large or complex-shaped molds, strictly adhering to a two-stage preheating process (350–450°C followed by 750–850°C) is essential for achieving consistent and reliable heat treatment quality.
