SKH51 High Wear Resistance – Where It Comes From And When It Wins Wear is the silent budget killer in every tooling workshop: tools that stay sharp twice as long halve your tooling spend and downtime.

SKH51 (JIS standard, equal to AISI M2, DIN 1.3343 and GB W6Mo5Cr4V2) delivers high wear resistance through its carbide architecture — and knowing which wear mechanism attacks your tool tells you whether SKH51 is the right answer.

The three sources of SKH51 high wear resistance:

1 - Vanadium MC carbides: with 1.75–2.20% vanadium, the steel forms hard MC carbides (around HV 2600) embedded in the matrix — the primary defense against abrasive wear.

2 - Molybdenum/tungsten M6C carbides: these support the matrix at high temperature and resist softening during continuous cutting.

3 - A tempered martensite matrix (HRC 63–65 after triple tempering at 550–580°C) that backs the carbides so they do not pull out under load.

Matching SKH51 to the wear mechanism you face:

- Abrasive wear (mineral-filled plastics, hard workpiece scale, glass): SKH51 high wear resistance performs strongly here thanks to vanadium carbides.

- Adhesive wear (stainless steels, low-carbon steels that stick to flanks): good performance with sharp, well-ground edges; polished flanks extend life further.

- Erosive and fatigue wear (punching thick sheet, progressive dies): SKH51 handles moderate duty; for extreme loads consider our higher-vanadium or PM grades — just ask.
