High Hardness and Wear Resistance: ASTM D2 steel contains up to 11-13% chromium and approximately 1.5% carbon.

These alloying elements form a large amount of chromium carbides (such as M7C3 type carbides) within the steel.

These carbides are very hard and uniformly distributed in the matrix, providing the material with excellent wear resistance, making it ideal for manufacturing molds and tools that withstand long-term friction.

Moderate Toughness: The high hardness and the presence of a large amount of carbides inevitably reduce the toughness of the material.

In conventional as-cast structures, these carbides are often distributed in a network at grain boundaries, which severely impairs toughness.

Therefore, the impact toughness value of ASTM D2 steel (typically in the single digits of joules) is much lower than that of structural steel.
