Machining Technology For Skd12 Steel Cutting Process - China

Cutting SKD12 steel is a highly specialized and common issue.

SKD12 steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work die steel, renowned for its high hardness, high wear resistance, and good hardenability.

Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, it presents greater challenges in cutting than ordinary steel.

Grinding:

Wheel Selection: Use green silicon carbide (GC) or diamond/CBN (cubic boron nitride) wheels.

CBN wheels are efficient and have a long lifespan, making them an ideal choice, but they are more expensive.

Parameters: Use a small depth of cut and sufficient coolant (usually water-based grinding fluid) to avoid burning the workpiece surface.

Special Machining: Suitable for machining cavities, small holes, and complex contours after quenching SKD12 steel.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): The most commonly used method.

Utilizes the principle of electrical discharge corrosion and is unaffected by material hardness.

It's important to note that a white, hard, and brittle altered layer (white layer) will form on the surface after machining.

For high-precision molds, subsequent polishing or the use of fine-machining parameters is necessary to reduce the thickness of this white layer.

Wire EDM (WEDM): Also utilizing the principle of electrical discharge machining, it is suitable for machining through-shaped parts.

Slow wire EDM offers high precision and good surface quality.

However, the white layer issue also needs to be considered.

In summary, the core approach to machining SKD12 steel is to match the appropriate machining method and tools according to the material's different hardness states, and to always prioritize the control of cooling and process parameters.

For the most critical post-quenching forming process, EDM and grinding remain the primary methods.
