EN NF 20NCD2 steel is a nickel-chromium-molybdenu m alloy carburizing steel (corresponding to number 1.6523) under the French NF standard.

Its machinability exhibits a significant condition-dependent characteristic.

It demonstrates excellent machinability in the annealed state, adaptable to various conventional machining methods.

However, machining becomes more difficult after heat treatment hardening.

The following is a detailed analysis: 1 - Machining Advantages in the Annealed State - Smooth Cutting: This steel is annealed at 920°C.

After annealing, the steel's hardness decreases, its microstructure becomes more uniform, and internal stress is significantly released.

Its carbon content is controlled within a low range of 0.18%-0.23%, and the content of harmful impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus is limited to ≤0.025% and ≤0.030%, respectively.

This reduces tool wear and jamming during cutting.

Whether it's turning, milling, or drilling, conventional cutting processes achieve good surface roughness and machining accuracy.

It is commonly used for roughing and semi-finishing of parts requiring precision machining, such as gears and bearings.

2 - Machining Considerations Under Different Conditions - Increased Machining Difficulty After Hardening: EN NF 20NCD2 steel, as a carburizing steel, undergoes carburizing at 880-980°C, surface quenching at 780-820°C, and tempering at 150-200°C.

This results in a high-hardness hardened layer on the surface, while the core retains a certain strength.

At this point, the steel's hardness increases significantly.

During cutting, not only does tool wear increase, but excessive cutting forces and chipping of the workpiece surface are also likely to occur.

Therefore, carbide tools must be used, and the cutting speed and feed rate should be reduced.
