JIS SKD12 steel is a high-carbon, medium-chromium cold work die steel.

One of its significant characteristics is its high hardenability, making it suitable for achieving uniform and high hardness in large-section dies under air-quenching conditions.

Reasons for High Hardenability: * Contains approximately 4.8–5.5% Cr, 0.9–1.2% Mo, and 0.15–0.5% V.

These alloying elements in JIS SKD12 steel significantly improve the steel's hardenability, allowing for the formation of a fully martensitic structure in the core.

* The alloying elements refine and evenly distribute carbides, resulting in less carbide segregation compared to Cr12 series steels.

This is beneficial for achieving high hardness in thick or large die sections even at slower cooling rates.

Manifestations of High Hardenability: Classified as an air-hardening die steel, it can achieve a hardness (HRC) of over 60 when air-cooled at 940–960 ℃, indicating that it can be fully hardened even in relatively weak cooling media.
