Cold Work Mold Steel 1.2436 exhibits excellent machinability and grindability—superior to that of SKD11—thereby extending tool life and reducing processing time.

This material possesses high hardenability, which helps mitigate issues related to insufficient hardness that may arise during vacuum heat treatment.

Through high-temperature tempering, Cold Work Mold Steel 1.2436 allows for the reduction of residual stress and retained austenite, effectively preventing cracking and deformation during wire-cut electrical discharge machining (EDM).

The material is well-suited for surface hardening treatments, such as nitriding; specifically, gas nitriding at 525°C yields a surface hardness of approximately 1250 HV, while soft nitriding at 570°C results in a surface hardness of approximately 950 HV.

The preheating and post-heating temperature requirements for repair welding operations are lower than those for SKD11, making the welding process significantly simpler.

Common heat treatment processes for this material include both single-hardening and double-hardening methods.
