1.2436 mold steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel widely utilized in the field of mold manufacturing due to its exceptional wear resistance and high hardness properties.

To further enhance its surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, the nitriding process serves as a common and effective method for surface strengthening.

Nitriding is a heat treatment process involving the diffusion of nitrogen atoms into a metal surface within a high-temperature environment.

For 1.2436 mold steel, the primary objective of nitriding is to form a dense, extremely hard nitride layer on its surface, thereby significantly extending the material's service life and improving its overall performance.

Specifically, the nitriding process typically comprises the following steps: 1 - Pre-treatment Phase: Prior to nitriding, the surface of the 1.2436 mold steel must undergo cleaning and pre-treatment.

The purpose of this step is to remove surface oxides, oil residues, and other impurities, ensuring that nitrogen atoms can diffuse uniformly into the metal surface during the nitriding process.

Common pre-treatment methods include mechanical polishing, chemical cleaning, and vacuum degassing.

2 - Nitriding Process: Inside a nitriding furnace, the 1.2436 mold steel is heated to a specific temperature range (typically between 500°C and 580°C), and a nitrogen-containing gas (such as ammonia or nitrogen) is introduced into the chamber.

Under the influence of high temperature and this specific atmosphere, nitrogen atoms gradually diffuse into the steel surface and chemically react with the metallic elements to form a dense nitride layer.

The duration and temperature of this process must be precisely controlled—based on specific performance requirements—to achieve optimal surface hardness and wear resistance.

Through the nitriding process, the surface hardness of 1.2436 mold steel can typically be elevated to over 1000 HV, while its wear resistance and corrosion resistance are simultaneously and significantly enhanced.

This enables the material to perform exceptionally well in the manufacturing of high-strength, high-precision molds, making it particularly suitable for operating environments subject to high friction and heavy impact loads.
