Key points of forging process of W-Nr 1.7225 steel

1 - Billet preparation

Cutting: sawing or flame cutting.

Oxygen cutting is recommended for diameters > 100mm.

After cutting, the oxide scale needs to be removed by grinding.

Pretreatment before heating: surface defects (cracks, sand holes) need to be polished and eliminated.

Defects with a depth > 2mm need to be repaired and reheated after welding.

2 - Heating specifications

Heating equipment: It is recommended to use a gas furnace or an electric heating furnace, and strictly control the atmosphere in the furnace (oxidizing atmosphere will aggravate decarburization).

Anti-decarburization measures: Anti-oxidation coating (such as borax + graphite) is applied to the surface of the billet, or heating is carried out in a protective atmosphere (nitrogen + methanol cracking gas).

3 - Forging operation

Initial forging temperature: 1100~1150℃ (not exceeding 1180℃ to prevent grain coarsening).

Final forging temperature: ≥850℃ (lower than 800℃, cracks are likely to occur, and reheating is required).

Forging ratio: 3~5 (important parts need to be ≥5, and the grains are refined by repeated deformation of drawing-upsetting).

Typical process parameters:

Forging on hammer: impact force>1000kg/cm², single deformation amount 30%~50%.

Forging on press: deformation speed 0.1~0.5m/s, step-by-step forging (rough forging→semi-finishing forging→finishing forging).
