Specific performance of mechanical processing of NF 42CD4 free cutting steel

1 - Cutting performance

Advantages:

The hardness of the annealed state (after softening treatment) is moderate (180~217HBW), and the cutting force is small.

When using carbide tools (such as YT15, YG8), the cutting speed can reach 80~120m/min (feed rate 0.1~0.3mm/r).

Challenges:

When not softened, the hardness is high (≥250HBW), the tool is easy to wear, and the cutting speed needs to be reduced (≤60m/min).

The chips are ribbon-shaped and easy to wrap around the tool, so chip breaker or high-pressure cooling (80~100bar) is required.

2 - Grinding performance

Grinding wheel selection: CBN grinding wheel (grit size 80~120) or WA white corundum grinding wheel (hardness K~L).

Parameter optimization: grinding wheel linear speed 35~45m/s, feed rate 0.01~0.03mm/time, large amount of coolant (flow rate ≥40L/min) is required to prevent burns.

3 - Drilling and tapping

Drilling:

Use cobalt-containing high-speed steel drill (such as M35) or carbide drill, cutting speed 10~20m/min, feed rate 0.1~0.2mm/r.

Deep hole processing (L/D＞5) requires gun drilling or internal cooling drill, coolant pressure ≥50bar.

Tapping:

It is recommended to perform nitriding treatment first (hardness ≤300HV), use spiral groove tap, and the bottom hole diameter before tapping = thread diameter - 0.5× pitch.
