It is a widely utilized cold-work tool steel characterized by high strength, good hardenability, and excellent wear resistance, though it possesses relatively poor impact toughness.

Tool steel 1.2436 offers good machinability and grindability; it performs stably during wire-cutting operations and is well-suited for surface-hardening treatments such as nitriding.

It is extensively employed in the manufacture of cold-work dies for processing both metallic and non-metallic materials—specifically for operations such as blanking, drawing, bending, cold extrusion, cold heading, thread rolling, and press bending.

Its primary applications include cold-stamping dies and punches (particularly those subjected to minimal impact loads but requiring high wear resistance), cold-shearing blades, drill bushings, gauges, wire-drawing dies, coining dies, thread-rolling dies, deep-drawing dies, and thread-rolling wheels.
